MBALE CITY
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is extending support to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in a bid to improve patient safety and service delivery.
Inoue Yoichi, the Chief Representative of JICA (Uganda Office), says the support extended to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital includes funding for medical equipment, renovation of infrastructure, technical assistance, and patient safety training aimed at improving service delivery. Other hospitals in Eastern Uganda that have benefited from this support include Soroti and Jinja Regional Referral Hospitals.
Program Officer in charge of Infrastructure and the Private Sector at the JICA Uganda Office, says JICA executes development assistance on behalf of the Japanese government. He adds that they have worked in Uganda over the years, together with the Government of Uganda, in various priority development sectors—especially agriculture (with emphasis on rice promotion), economic infrastructure development, health, water supply, and education.
Muhame says some of the projects are loans that the Government of Uganda will pay back to Japan, while others are grants.
