Office of the Deputy RDC Jinja District Hassan Kasibante on Sunday 7th December 2025 suspended all operations at Itanda Falls in Butagaya Subcounty with immediate effect after the drowning of a 25-year-old student of Kampala International University identified as Franko Maino.
He added that the suspension will remain in force as the Uganda Police, NEMA, District Security Committee and other relevant agencies carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of this tragedy.
The victim, Franco Maino, who was a resident of Kakira Town Council, had reportedly visited the falls with colleagues on Saturday when he attempted to swim in the fast-flowing waters only to be swept away by the rapids.
Kasibante said the tragedy follows several similar incidents at Itanda and neighboring Busowoko Falls, raising fresh concerns about safety standards for both tourists and local visitors.
Itanda Falls, located along the River Nile in Butagaya Sub- County, Jinja District, is one of Uganda’s most prominent adventure tourism sites in Busoga known for its powerful grade five rapids that attract white-water rafters and Kayakers.
Several drowning incidents have been recorded at the site, prompting repeated calls for strict safety measures, improved signage and closer supervision of recreational activities.
