BUSOGA

Sugarcane farmers in the Busoga sub-region are reeling with anger after two major Sugar Industries in the region announced a reduction of cane prices.
A notice to sugarcane farmers by Kamuli Sugar Limited dated 11th December, 2025 says the sugarcane prices have been reduced from Shs120,000 to Shs115,000 per ton with immediate effect.
Similarly, a notice by Mayuge Sugar Industries Limited dated 11th December, sends the same information with the reduction taking effect on Friday, 12th December, 2025.
Reacting to the price reductions, the State Minister for Youths, Dr, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi questions the timing of the price reductions.
“Why are sugarcane factories changing sugar prices just one month before the elections? What is the motive? Farmers are already battling drought, yet they are being “rewarded” with reduced cane prices. Will the price of kilo of sugar drop for the final consumer? This decision needs to be revised. It poses a serious risk to NRM and our flag bearers. The intention behind it does not reflect goodwill.” Writes Balaam on his X- Account.
