Lira City, Uganda — Former All Saints University Lango (ASUL) Vice Chancellor Prof Andrew Anthony Cula has been found dead at his residence in Lira City, sending shockwaves through the academic community in northern Uganda.
According to university officials and colleagues, Prof Cula’s body was discovered on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at his home in Teso Bar, West Division. Preliminary information indicates that the retired professor reportedly fell ill during the night and attempted to seek assistance, but help came too late.
Sources at the university confirmed that Prof Cula had been living alone in Lira while his family resided in Kampala. His body has been transferred to Lira University Teaching Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Prof Cula retired in November 2025 after serving as Vice Chancellor of ASUL, a private university founded in 2008. During his tenure, he championed institutional growth and advocated for government financial support to private universities affected by economic challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic.
An academic with a background in public health and microbiology, he was widely respected for his contribution to higher education and mentorship of students across the region. Education stakeholders have described his passing as a significant loss to Uganda’s academic fraternity.
