The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Board of Directors have today, Wednesday, 11th February, 2026 conducted inspection of the Elgon project to gain insights, familiarity and provide oversights on the progress of the project.
The Elgon project is one of the projects within NEMA that is being implemented in 38 sub-counties in the districts of Bududa, Bukwo, Bulambuli, Kapchorwa, Kween, Manafwa, Mbale, Namisindwa and Sironko.
The Project aims to enhance conservation of ecosystems that provide critical goods and services for rural livelihoods and food security in the Mt. Elgon landscape.
The Executive Diretor at NEMA Dr. Barirega cautioned local authorities to ensure the project progress is not undone.
The Elgon project has achieved in many areas;
Promoted Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices including on-farm diversification, to improve food crop value chains in the Mt Elgon landscape.
Increased adoption of sustainable coffee and staple crops production practices in the Mt. Elgon landscape.
Increased integrated Agroforestry Community Conservation Enterprises.
A total of 430,000 assorted tree seedlings and 100,000 bamboo was raised. Of the raised seedlings, 220,000 assorted tree seedlings and 12,000 bamboo were distributed to project partners involved in restoration activities for planting in degraded forests, wetlands and riverbanks.
The Elgon Project is being supported by government and UNEP.
