The region of Teso is in mourning following the passing of esteemed educator, Horace Byatt Ocaet.

Family member, Simon Joseph Engitu confirmed that Ocaet, who served as headteacher at Amuria Secondary School and deputy headteacher at Teso College Aloet, passed away early this morning, Thursday, 12th February, 2026 at Ococia Health Centre 3 in Orungo County, Amuria District, around 5 a.m.

While the exact cause of his death has yet to be released by medical professionals, relatives note that Ocaet had recently been dealing with high blood pressure and diarrhea.

Ocaet’s contributions to education were substantial; he was also a former deputy headteacher at Dr. Obote College and secretary Teso Secondary Schools Mock Examinations Association (TESMEA).

He was also actively involved in the Diocesan Synod, serving as Chairman of the Board of Education for the Diocese of Soroti.

Joseph Emagu, shared that Ocaet’s passing feels premature, leaving a void for those eager to benefit from his vast knowledge and wisdom. Teacher Samuel Eyatu remarked that the community has lost a true pillar—an educator, mentor, and counselor.

Many in Teso regarded him as an elder and peacemaker, viewing him as a treasure within the teaching profession.
