Farmers in Bukwo district have unanimously rejected a 52 billion shilling project by Itracom Fertilizers Uganda Smc Limited, a manufacturer of organo-mineral fertilizers.
The project, aimed at benefiting local farmers through Sebei Cooperative Union, has been rejected due to ongoing land conflicts in the area.
Government officials met with stakeholders in Suam on Saturday, 14th February, 2026 to discuss the stalled inorganic fertilizer factory project in Bukwo district. The meeting aimed to find ways to convince farmers to accept the investor’s proposal.
The factory was to manufacture fertilizer and breed high quality seedlings for Irish potatoes for farmers in the region.
However, Alex Alinga, a farmer from Sebei Cooperative Union, rejected the proposal, stating that farmers hadn’t been adequately sensitized about the project’s benefits.
He accused the investor of negotiating only with cooperative leaders, sidelining land-owning farmers.
Helen Chemutai, another farmer urged government and the investor to withdraw the idea of taking their land because they are not ready to lose it.
Hoanluc Bugiriman, representing Itracom Fertilizers Uganda Smc Limited, said the project would create jobs and provide affordable Irish potato seedlings, benefiting the community and farmers. He accused some locals of inciting opposition to the project, despite potential benefits.
