Four people are in critical condition after a suspected grenade exploded on Tuesday, 17th March, 2026 at Mbale garage located at St. Andrews Cell, Industrial City Division, Mbale City. The blast has left the area in shock.
Aziz Kigongo, LC1 Chairperson of St. Andrews cell, says the unknown object, suspected to be a grenade, blasted from scrap items.
He says the injured were buying and selling scrap metals from Mbale garage, and that the scrap metals had been bought from Moroto district.
SP Rogers Taitika, Elgon region police spokesperson, confirms the incident and says police are investigating.
He warns scrap dealers against collecting or buying metallic items, saying it may cost them their lives.
Taitika says the injured are receiving treatment at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
