The ever alert fraudsters are now targeting the over 200 public officials that the IGG recently listed requiring them to refund funds they misused by 31st March, 2026 or risk prosecution.
In an official statement issued on Friday, 27th March, 2026, the Inspectorate of Government says fraudsters are now sending SMS, WhatsApp messages and make direct calls to the affected officials asking for the payments.
“The Inspectorate of Government has noted with concern incidents of fraudsters impersonating its staff in order to extort money from public officials required to refund public funds to the government of Uganda,” reads the IG statement.
The IG advises the affected officials to verify any payment related communication by contacting the IG on 0754 730196.
Most importantly, all payments are to be made at the IG Asset Recovery Account held at the Bank of Uganda as communicated in the IG orders to the affected public officials.
The affected public officials allegedly used the monies for personal gain at the expense of public services thereby causing financial loss to government.
