The World’s oldest President, Cameroon’s Paul Biya has appointed his son to the position of Vice President and head of the Armed Forces.
The Presidential Decree dated 4th April, 2026 appoints Franck Emmanuel Biya and gives him authority to appoint the Minister for Defence.
The appointment is seen by many as a move to consolidate control over the country’s political and military structures at a time of heightened unrest and a probable succession plan.
The 93 year old Paul Biya has been the President of Cameroon for over 43 years, having taken office on November 6, 1982. As of early 2026, the 93-year-old leader is the world’s oldest serving head of state and one of the longest-ruling leaders, recently securing an eighth term in October 2025.
