Former owner of Chelsea Football Club and former Coach, Roman Abromavich and Jose Mourinho respectively have spoken out on Wednesday, 22nd April, 2026 sacking of Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea Football Club issued a statement yesterday confirming the sacking of their Head Coach, Liam Rosenior.
On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.
This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.
Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.
As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.
Reacting to the sacking Abromavich known for his love for Chelsea said on his X-Account, “Five games, no goals, no identity—this is not the Chelsea I built. This is a circus. A complete joke.”
He goes ahead to say;
You sack a good coach who understood the club, then bring in ‘experience’ with no direction, no philosophy, no results. What exactly is the plan? Because from the outside, it looks like panic and pure mismanagement.
Chelsea was never about buying names and hoping for magic. It was about investing in real players—leaders, warriors, world-class mentality. Now I see expensive signings with no hunger, no spine.
The board should be ashamed. This club is losing its identity, its fear factor, its standards. Right now, Chelsea is not a top club—it’s a mess.”

Jose Mourinho statement verbatim
“Chelsea FC sacked a proper manager who delivered two major trophies in just a few months, only to replace him with someone who feels more like a journalist than a coach. Since then, everything has looked off—no identity, no consistency, no fight.
The players look drained, both mentally and physically. There’s no chemistry, no clear direction, and it’s obvious many of them aren’t buying into whatever system is being forced on them. You can see the frustration on the pitch—misplaced passes, lack of urgency, and zero belief.
At a club that once thrived on strong leadership and winning mentality, this feels like a complete step backwards. Instead of building on success, they’ve created confusion. And right now, it doesn’t look like anyone—fans or players—truly understands the plan.”
A clear divide is beginning to show at Chelsea FC following the heavy defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, and it’s now out in the open.
A day before the sacking, Defender Trevoh Chalobah publicly disagreed with Liam Rosenior after the 3-0 loss to Brentford, pushing back on claims that the players lacked desire.
🗣️ Chalobah: “The boys were running their socks off… it’s nothing to do with effort.”
That directly contradicted Rosenior’s blunt assessment:
🗣️ Rosenior: “Tonight was not about tactics, it was about desire”.
The result itself was historic for all the wrong reasons, five straight league defeats without scoring, something not seen since 1912.
But more worrying than the result is what it revealed behind the scenes:
Players insisting effort isn’t the problem, Manager openly questioning commitment and Performances continuing to collapse. This wasn’t just poor form anymore, it was a full-blown disconnect.
Everything pointed to the fact that squad and manager were no longer on the same page…The rest as they say is now HISTORY.
