President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has explained in detail why Chief of Defence Forces and 1st son, Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi is nicknamed ‘Muogi.”
While wishing his son a 52nd Happy Birthday on Friday, 24th April, 2026, President Museveni ran through the nicknames of his children beginning with Muhoozi as Muogi, Natasha (Kukuru), Patience (Pusi) and Kyaremeera (Kyinini).
Following public demand, President Museveni has today, Saturday, April 25, 2026 explained the nickname saying it originated from how former President, Gen. Tito Okello fondly called the toddler when they were both in exile in Tanzania.
“I always call Muhoozi, Muogi. It is because our neighbour in Upanga, Dar-es-Salaam, was Mzee Tito Okello (Gen). Being a traditional Acholi, he had a problem with pronouncing the “z” in Muhoozi’s name. Hence, the Muogi and Maama Janet also became Maama Muogi.
President Museveni however, says Tito’s wife was safely Maama Jennifer because they had no problem pronouncing Jennifer, the sister of Okello Oryem who unfortunately died some years ago.
