KAGADI: Tens Feared Dead after Canoe Capsizes on River Nguse

KAGADI

 

Police in Kagadi District have embarked on investigations into a tragic incident in which a canoe carrying an estimated 35–40 passengers capsized on River Nguse at Kyaleni Village, Pachwa Town Council on Tuesday 28th April, 2026.

 

Julius Hakiza, Police spokesperson in Albertine Region said marine police responded immediately and one survivor identified as Byaruhanga Tumuhaise 27, a resident of Kyaleni was rescued.

 

The exact number of missing persons is yet to be confirmed due to lack of a passenger manifest.

 

Marine Police are conducting search and rescue operations, while an inquiry into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Possible factors include overloading, night travel, and the condition of the vessel.

 

Police has urged relatives of anyone who may have been on the canoe to report to Kagadi CPS.
