KAMPALA
National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has paused wetland restoration within Kampala City area.
NEMA confirms the temporary pause in a press statement dated Monday, June 8, 2026 saying the purpose is to give encroachers a 30 day grace period to voluntarily vacate the wetlands.
According to NEMA, the decision was reached following a consensus reached among relevant authorities that KCCA will work with all stakeholders to encourage and facilitate voluntary departure of persons encroaching on the wetlands.
“Accordingly, effective 8th June, 2026, all persons occupying, developing, or carrying out activities in encroached wetland areas are required to make arrangements to leave voluntarily and peacefully within the 30 day grace period,” reads the statement in part.
Meanwhile, NEMA says it will continue to undertake monitoring operations to prevent re-encroachment, re-entry into the restored wetland areas and to stop any new encroachment and issuing Restoration orders.
A strong warning has been sent to encroachers of Bugolobi, Luzira, Namuwongo, Lubigi, Kansanga, Ggaba, Katogo and Munyonyo wetlands to utilize this grace period to vacate encroached wetland areas.
NEMA promises to continue with enforcement of encroached areas after the expiration of the 30 day grace period without any further notice adding that operations across the country continue until all encroached wetlands are restored.
