Honorable Sanjay Tanna has today, Wednesday, 10th June, 2026 been sworn in by Parliament, sealing the appointment process and confirming him as the new Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.
This appointment that has received countrywide acclaim places Tanna in the books of History as the first Ugandan of Indian descent to serve in Cabinet as full Minister with the Portfolio of Trade, Industry & Cooperatives.
The two Ugandans of Indian descent that served in high profile government positions were N.M. Patel who held the position of Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from 1963 until January 1971. He made history as the first non-European to hold the role, serving throughout the First Republic until Idi Amin dissolved the legislature.
The second was Shafiq Arain who was a diplomat and later a Minister in the Obote II government. He however, had no portfolio.
Following the overthrow of Idi Amin’s regime Arain served as a prominent government minister and held a key diplomatic post as Uganda’s High Commissioner to London (to the Court of St. James).
Prior to the 1970s, Arain was heavily involved in the East African Community, before going into exile.

Significance of Tanna’s Appointment;
Hon. Sanjay Tanna has not only been appointed Minister but Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives. This suits his business experience, acumen and a ‘dyed in the wool’ hobby-investing in ventures that are viable.
Speaking to this Publication, a close associate of the Minister describes him as a Visionary businessman, with an eye for profitability.
“Tanna is a businessman who takes informed decisions, believes in consistency as a basis for business growth and has a millionaire’s patience,” he told this publication.
He has been through production, distribution business, modern farming, media, tours and travel, Private Security Services, manufacturing, fuel and petroleum products distribution, Hospitality, real estate, transport and regional logistics.
He therefore understands Uganda’s business and Investment environment and does not need to be lectured on how to improve this environment for increased industrialization.
Tanna has employed thousands of Ugandans in the many businesses mentioned above and understands that improved trade brings in income and foreign exchange. He understands that increased industrialization increases national income, creates employment opportunities and makes agriculture more attractive.
The appointment is also in a way a recognition of the Asian’s community’s contribution towards the economic growth of Uganda. For instance, over 60% of Taxes collected by URA comes from Indo-Asian owned companies.
Tanna’s international exposure is a fitting bait for foreign investors. They will trust him, not only because he is of Indian descent but most importantly because he is an investor himself. He also has ability to give very good advice to the appointing authority on how best to attract, maintain and grow both native and foreign investors.
Tanna possesses rare attributes- approachability and a listening ear. These attributes are important to a public figure. In his new role, he has to listen to the business community/ Investors and appreciate their concerns before he presents such concerns to the appointing authority and or Cabinet.
Unlike many political appointees, Hon Tanna brings decades of hands-on experience in business, trade, supply chains, imports, exports and regional commerce to the Trade Ministry, where such real world exposure is seen as particularly relevant to its mandate of driving industrialization, manufacturing, exports and investment.
His appointment is widely viewed as a symbol of Uganda’s ongoing economic transition as well as a milestone for the country’s Asian community, which has increasingly become weary of the investment environment and policy making process. This appointment will go a long way in comforting them and helping in resolving their issues.
This publication has also learnt that Hon. Tanna is in good books with the charismatic Indian Prime Minister , Narendra Modi with whom many believe should be able to boost the cooperation and growth between the two nations.
