KAMPALA
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has been ordered by the High Court to file his defence within seven days in a case linked to alleged death threats against opposition stalwart Kizza Besigye.
Justice Baguma issued the directive on Thursday, 11th June, 2026 at the Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala, setting June 18 as the deadline for Gen. Muhoozi’s response.
“The respondent (Gen. Muhoozi), take note, is given one week to file a reply by June 18,” the judge stated during proceedings.
The petition was filed after a series of controversial social media statements allegedly made by Gen. Muhoozi targeting Dr. Besigye. Lawyers representing the opposition leader argue that the remarks amounted to threats and violated constitutional guarantees relating to personal security and dignity.
The legal challenge has attracted attention from political observers and civil society groups, many of whom view the case as a test of accountability for public officials and the limits of political expression by military leaders.
Dr. Besigye, a longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni and former presidential contender, has over the years accused state agencies of harassment and intimidation linked to his political activities.
Gen. Muhoozi, who is also President Museveni’s son, has become an influential political figure in recent years, frequently making headlines for his outspoken remarks on social media touching on national politics, security and regional affairs.
The matter is expected to come up again in court after the defence files its response next week.
