Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially launched its move to remove the current Leader of Opposition in Parliament, NUP’s Joel Ssenyoyi.
This has been confirmed by former Secretary General of PLU, Daudi Kabanda on his X-Handle today, Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
“The process of getting the new Leader of Opposition has officially commenced. Don’t ask me how, just know we will achieve it and we will do it legally,” writes Kabanda.
Kabanda also shares a letter of Notice of Motion addressed to the Rt Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Markson Oboth Oboth dated 24th June, 2026 by Hon. Namara Dennis, Buyaga West MP.
The Notice of Motion aims to introduce a private member’s bill to amend the Administration of Parliament.
“In accordance with Rule 58 of the Rules of Procedure of Parliament, I hereby give notice of my intention to move a motion for leave of the House to introduce a Private Members Bill, entitled, “The Administration of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2026” reads the notice.
This action is a follow up by PLU Members of Parliament to implement General Muhoozi’s directive to remove Joel Ssenyonyi from the prestigious position that has traditionally been held by the largest opposition party in Parliament.
Muhoozi recently instructed Kabanda to ensure this happens. In a series of posts on X on June 18, 2026, Gen Kainerugaba said he wanted a replacement for the Nakawa West MP and that the new opposition leader would have his backing.
“I want a new leader of the opposition in Parliament. And I will get him. He will be endorsed by me,” Gen Kainerugaba posted.
His remarks drew a response from Kasambya County MP David Kabanda, a member of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), who wrote: “Ok Sir. Mine is to implement.”
Explaining the intent of the motion, MP Namara says, “The amendment of the law to put a better process through which the Leader of Opposition is chosen is not targeting our brother @JoelSsenyonyi. The proposed amendment will focus on LOP, Commissioners & Committee leadership. It’s not about an individual called Ssenyonyi as some want to allege. Its a law that will work even when @NUP_Ug is no longer the leading opposition party.”
