Leaders in Namisindwa District have today Wednesday, 1st July, 2026 officially launched a district-wide rabies vaccination campaign aimed at vaccinating more than 3,000 dogs and cats to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
The campaign was launched at the LC5 Chairperson’s Boardroom at the Namisindwa District Headquarters.
The District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Lydia Nandutu, said the vaccination exercise will cover all dogs and cats because rabies is transmitted from infected pets to humans. She described rabies as a fatal disease and emphasized that the campaign is intended to control the disease at its source.
Dr. Nandutu also revealed that veterinary teams have been conducting awareness campaigns in schools to educate communities about the dangers of dog bites and the importance of preventing rabies.
Speaking at the launch, Namisindwa District LC5 Chairperson Bwayo Emma said the district had received 3,000 doses of the rabies vaccine, which will be administered free of charge. He added that the consignment also includes needles, gloves, and vaccination certificates.
The LC5 Chairperson warned against the misuse of the vaccines, noting that rabies has claimed many lives in the district. He cited the recent death of a young man who succumbed to rabies after being bitten by a dog and was buried earlier this week.
He called upon local leaders to intensify community mobilization to ensure the success of the vaccination campaign and urged residents to present their dogs and cats for vaccination to protect both animals and the community from rabies.
