KAMPALA
Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), in conjunction with licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs), licensed operators and relevant government agencies, have launched a manhunt for illegal public Wi-Fi providers.
A statement released by UCC dated July 8, 2026, UCC Executive Director, Hon. Nyombi Thembo says the enforcement initiative aims to ensure that all public internet service providers operate within the established legal and regulatory framework and uphold the same standards of accountability and reliability.
The commission revealed that the enforcement is meant to foster a safe digital environment, in which all users can trust the services they receive.
“Individuals and businesses currently offering unsanctioned services should regularize their operations promptly or cease services altogether,” the statement reads.
The commission noted that the move comes at a time, when the increasing demand for access and affordable internet connectivity has spurred new business ventures, which makes it vital to ensure the internet providers adhered to national laws and regulations, so as to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of the communications ecosystem.
“Unlicensed operators have been found installing telecommunications equipment to provide unauthorized Wi-Fi hotspot services, in contravention of this regulatory framework,” the statement reads.
UCC noted that the illegal installations pose significant risks to consumers and compromise the integrity of critical communications infrastructure. On this note, the commission encourages consumers to seek internet services only from licensed providers or their authorized agents to ensure security and reliable support.
