The Office of the Tororo District Resident Commissioner has commissioned two modern 5-stance VIP pit latrines worth Shs 76 million in Tororo Municipality, aimed at easing congestion in schools grappling with rising learner enrollment.
The facilities were handed over to Rock View Primary School and Tororo College Primary School on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2026. Each latrine was constructed at Shs 38 million using funds from the central government’s development grant.
While commissioning the projects, Assistant RDC Aidah Kigeni commended the municipal council for prioritizing learners’ health and sanitation.
“We thank the municipal council for putting learners first. These facilities will create a healthier and more conducive learning environment,” Kigeni said.
She urged school administrations to maintain the latrines properly to ensure they serve learners for years.
Kigeni, however, used the occasion to issue a stern warning to municipal officials and contractors. “Let the team at the municipality put their house in order. There should be no accountability gaps. The ongoing corruption crackdown in the country will not spare anyone found culpable,” she cautioned.
Tororo Municipality Education Officer, Teddy Ajuma Makola said the latrines fulfill government’s commitment to improving school infrastructure.
“This is about dignity and health for our learners. We are grateful that government listened to the challenge of overcrowding,” Makola noted.
The RDC’s team, which included members of the Social Services Committee and technical staff, also inspected ongoing works at Aturukuku Seed Secondary School and the renovation of Rock View School’s multi-purpose hall.
Works at Aturukuku Seed School currently stand at 70%, while the phased renovation at Rock View Hall is at 50%.
Tororo Municipality Mayor Bernard Ochieng praised contractors for timely delivery, saying it should be the “new normal” at the council.
He, however, expressed disappointment over the slow pace at Aturukuku Seed School with only two months left to the contract deadline.
“The contractor, CK Associates, must expedite work. More importantly, they must clear workers’ arrears stretching over 5 months, and exploiting locals will not be tolerated,” Ochieng warned.
Senior Assistant Town Clerk, Christine Anyango assured residents that the council will closely monitor CK Associates to ensure the seed school project is completed on time so learning can commence.
With sanitation facilities now in place and major projects under watch, Tororo Municipality leaders say the focus has shifted to accountability, timely delivery, and service delivery for the people.
