The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Dr. Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has initiated a nationwide campaign aimed at rallying support for the communities suffering from hunger in the Karamoja sub-region.

This campaign, named “UMSC Karamoja Hunger Rescue Appeal-2026,” seeks to gather essential items such as maize flour, beans, rice, cooking oil, and clothing to aid families in distress.

Sheikh Imran Abdul Noor Ssali, Secretary for Religious Affairs, announced this initiative on behalf of the Mufti after prayers held at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Headquarters Mosque in Old Kampala.

The decision came out of a two-day Quarterly Interface Meeting, which took place on July 29th and 30th, 2026, at the UMSC Headquarters.

This meeting involved the National Management Committee, Regional Assistants to the Mufti and their Secretaries, District Kadis, and the National Committee of the Muslim Women Council.

The urgent need for assistance was brought to the Mufti’s attention following a working visit by Sheikh Abubakar Umar Obilan, the Regional Assistant to the Mufti (RAM) for the Teso-Karamoja Region.

During this visit, Sheikh Muhammad Akida Lokure, the Kadhi of the Karamoja Muslim District, guided the RAM through villages devastated by crop failures due to severe weather conditions.

In light of this troubling report, the Mufti shared his concerns, highlighting the situation in Karamoja during his address at the Interface Meeting.

The issue was recognized as a national concern for the Muslim community, prompting participants to engage in discussions and formulate recommendations.

The meeting, endorsed by UMSC Spokesperson Haj Ashiraf Zziwa on July 1st, 2026, confirmed the appeal, assigning Secretary General Al-Hajji Abbas Ssekyanzi Mulubya to reach out for support nationwide, directing Regional Assistants to mobilize congregations for relief efforts, and establishing a National Committee for the collection and distribution of aid at UMSC Headquarters in Old Kampala.

The Mufti has called upon all Muslims and people of goodwill to support this humanitarian cause and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Karamoja during this difficult time.
