The Ministry of Works and Transport, has started constructing two bridges in Butaleja district, to help residents of Nawanjofu Sub County, and Namehere in Himutu Sub County, ease their movements.
Joan Namayanja, the Geotechnical Engineer, attached to the Ministry of Works says they want to improve on accessibility in Butaleja district, explaining that they began with feasibility study in the affected areas.
Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, 5th August, 2026, Namayanja, said they took some soil samples to ascertain the materials worth using for a strong bridge.
Eng. Namayanja, said government has plans of constructing same bridges at different roads in 77 districts, pending a recommendation of the district leadership to pronounce the most critical roads needful for Works.
Aggrey Higenyi, the Butaleja district Engineer, welcomed the Ministry’s decision, pitying the natives of Hisiiro Island for their inaccessibility challenges.
“The people of Hisiiro Island in Nawanjofu Sub County have suffered for long without a road which connects them to the neighbours. Many children have died in water as they attempted to cross the water,” Higenyi said.
Eng. Higenyi, also said that so many other roads across Butaleja district need more services from the Ministry of Works.
Paul Ganghole, one of the beneficiaries from Hisiiro, thanked the Government for the care, exhibited upon the natives of Hisiiro Island.
He said that they have had numerous challenges due to inaccessibility, including losing two of their colleagues this year, as they tried to cross over the heavy water.
While Jesca Namwima, regretted that her pregnant co-wife died helplessly last year. According to her, the woman underwent labour pains but couldn’t successfully cross the water by boat in the wee hours causing her death.
Namwima, also said that many of their children often drown in the Hisiiro water, or reach schools late.
