The State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations in the Ministry of Labour and Social Development has written a letter demanding that the Head Teacher of Magale Secondary School in Magale Town Council, Namisindwa District, Joseph Washi Makwa. step down and hand over office to his deputy pending investigations.
Simon Mulongo in his letter dated 9th August 2026, and addressed to the Regional Police Commander, says that during a recent visit to Namisindwa District by the Minister for Local Government, Balaam Baruhagira, a baraza was held at Magale playground where parents and students openly pinned the head teacher for illegally levying school fees without consulting parents during a PTA meeting, mismanagement of funds, and other allegations.
In the letter, the minister said Balaam ordered the Namisindwa District Police Commander and the CID to summon the head teacher to record a statement, but wondered why the head teacher was still moving freely in Magale up to now.
He also accused the head teacher of closing the school on 5th August 2026, which jeopardized examinations for candidate classes. This, he said, is against the law. The minister further accused the head teacher of illegally increasing school fees without consulting parents.
Therefore, the minister has written to the Regional Police Commander to establish why the DPC Namisindwa failed to summon the head teacher to record a statement. He also called for a quick investigation into why the school was closed.
Efforts to get a comment from the head teacher were futile by press time, as he did not pick up repeated phone calls.
When contacted on phone, Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson said he had not yet received any information and was unable to give a comment.
