A section of NRM members in Jinja city have tasked the party’s national chairperson President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to intervene in the election of the NRM flag bearer of the Jinja City Women League Council chairperson.

They accuse the chairperson of NRM electoral commission Dr. Tanga Odoi of failure to preside over the electoral process.

The post for Chairperson had two candidates Mirembe Esther and Namiiro Fauza Nalongo. The Jinja City NRM electoral officer Nyiiro Moses first organized an election at Jinja City Hall a fortnight ago which flopped.

Another election was organized and Namiiro was declared winner which didn’t go well with Esther Mirembe’s side who contested the results.

Jinja City NRM chairperson Edrine Lufafa and the election officer nullified the election and organized the third time on Sunday 23rd August 2026 at Jinja SS amidst tight security.

However, to the dismay of members the NRM electoral commission chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi presided over the election of Vice chairperson, Treasurer, publicity and general secretary and left the position of chairperson pending.

Namiiro, the incumbent chairperson Jinja Northern Division Women Council, who spoke to this publication said that the previous election flopped because her contender Mirembe Esther brought goons who were violent and beat up her supporters.

“When Tanga Odoi came I thought he had come to preside over the election but to my surprise he called for a meeting to have the impasse solved between the contenders to which we didn’t agree and opted for an election.” Said Namiiro.

She insisted that she is the rightful NRM flag bearer and will not bow out of the race, accusing NRM registrars and administrators of corruption and disorganization of the party in Jinja City.

On the other hand, Mirembe Esther claims that she had been voted two days ago at Jinja City Hall using the NRM electoral commission guidelines to represent Jinja City women as chairperson, where Namiiro allegedly walked out and didn’t participate. Mirembe also has a declaration form from the Jinja City NRM office

However, when this publication spoke to Tanga Odoi he said if the previous election was done but the party’s electoral commission issued new guidelines then that is for the legal department to handle.

Dr. Tanga said the NRM Secretary General advised him not to preside over election of the position of chairperson until the legal directorate has advised so that no confusion is brought to the people of Jinja City.

This publication awaits communication from Dr. Tanga on whether there will be another election or not.
