KAMPALA CITY
Police has impounded 178 Public Service Vehicles in Kampala Metropolitan Area in day one of the operation declared by the Ministry of Works and Transport against Taxis that are in Dangerous Mechanical Conditions.
In enforcement operations against Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) operating in dangerous mechanical conditions conducted on Monday, 24 August 2026, a total of 178 vehicles have been impounded and are currently being held at various police stations within the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area.
The breakdown is as follows: KMP East: 53 vehicles, KMP South: 62 vehicles, and KMP North: 63 vehicles.
According to police, the operation is aimed at ensuring that all Public Service Vehicles operating on Kampala City roads are roadworthy, properly maintained and compliant with the required safety standards.
“We strongly urge all PSV owners, operators and drivers to prioritise the safety of passengers and other road users by ensuring that their vehicles are regularly inspected, properly maintained and kept in a safe and roadworthy condition,” reads a police statement issued on Monday.
A mechanically unsafe vehicle is not only a danger to its passengers but also poses a serious risk to other road users. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and there will be no compromise where the safety of the public is concerned.
The Police Spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke says the enforcement operations will continue until sanity and full compliance are restored within the KMP area.
He says that PSV owners, operators and drivers are therefore advised to inspect and rectify any mechanical defects on their vehicles before putting them on the road.
