Tooro Kingdom officials have spoken out on who will succeed the fallen Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died at the age of 34 in the evening of Thursday, 27th August, 2026.
While confirming the death, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki revealed that the deceased has left behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.
King Oyo, who was born on April 16, 1992, died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, exactly 31 years and a day to the date his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, passed on.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening,” Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki said in a statement.
King Oyo is understood to have been in coma for days before his passing. Sources say the monarch, who was admitted in a foreign hospital, had been diagnosed with brain cancer at advanced stage.
“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda,” Premier Rwomiire said.
He called upon the people of Tooro to “remain united, calm and prayerful during this difficult time”.
The kingdom said the continuity of the Crown is assured.
“His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” Premier Rwomiire added.
Oyo ascended the Tooro throne in 1995 at the age of three, becoming the world’s youngest kind. His death means he is the world’s youngest monarch in life and death.
The King had reportedly been in the United States for medical treatment for an undisclosed illness. Details surrounding his death and his reported illness have not yet been made public.
King Oyo had reigned as Omukama for nearly 31 years, having been enthroned on September 12, 1995.
He was initially guided by regents because of his young age and formally assumed the administration of the kingdom after turning 18 in 2010.
