As the country prepares for Commencement of Oil Exports from the Albertine region, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today September 2, 2026, named Uganda’s Crude Oil at Kingfisher Production Facility on the shores of Lake Albert “Pearl Sweet Petroleum” .
Museveni noted that the name reflects the quality of Uganda’s crude oil, which has a low sulphur content and is generally considered more valuable on the international market because it is easier and cheaper to refine.
The President said Uganda’s petroleum is “sweet” because it contains little sulphur, distinguishing it from crude oil with high sulphur content, which requires additional processing and can attract higher refining costs.
Museveni’s visit to the oil development projects in the Albertine Graben today comes a day after the Energy and Mineral Development Minister Dr Monica Musenero Masanza, led senior officials from the ministry, the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, and Uganda National Oil Company on a tour of the area.
The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) in a statement released on their X account, noted that the naming of the crude blend will mark an important stage in the country’s transition from developing its oil resource to preparing it for the international market.
It should be noted that Uganda is preparing to enter the global oil market as the country advances the development of its oil resources in the Albertine Graben.
The commercial oil project is being developed by the government alongside its partners, with crude oil expected to be transported through the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) for export.
