The management of Bududa District Hospital has been suspended to pave way for investigations into a series of reported maternal deaths at the facility.
Those suspended include Medical Superintendent, Dr. Sylvia Ntegeka, Senior Hospital Administrator, Hamza Kaabale, Dr. Charles Mushikoma and Elina Nakusi.
The decision was reached during a District Security Committee meeting chaired by Bududa Resident District Commissioner Juliet Solome Namara on Tuesday, 8th September, 2026.
Namara said the administrators will remain out of office until investigations establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and whether failures in service delivery contributed to them.
The committee also resolved to temporarily close the hospital’s private wing for two weeks following concerns over the deployment of doctors between the private wing and general wards.
Namara alleged that some doctors were giving greater attention to patients in the private wing because they paid for services, potentially disadvantaging patients in the general wards.
The suspension follows public concern over several maternal deaths, including those of 31-year-old Jenifer Nasaka, Aidah Bisikwa and, most recently, Sandra Khabuya. Allegations of neglect have been raised in some of the cases, although investigations are expected to establish the circumstances of each death.
District Health Officer Dr. Alex Kakala Mushiso said the district would immediately reorganise the hospital’s management to strengthen supervision and improve service delivery.
The District Executive Committee, chaired by LC V Chairperson Geoffrey Natubu, is expected to determine the interim management team.
