Former Jinja Councilor, Joseph Ngobi Builds New Chapter in United Kingdom

By Markson Omagor

Former Jinja City councillor Joseph Ngobi is building a new chapter of his life in the United Kingdom after years of community and political involvement in Uganda.

Ngobi previously served as a councillor representing Namulesa North Ward in Jinja City. His time in local government gave him direct experience of the challenges faced by residents and exposed him to the responsibilities that come with representing a community.

Now living in the UK, Ngobi is focusing on his personal and professional development while continuing to maintain an interest in community affairs.

Reflecting on his experience in public service, Ngobi says his time as a councillor taught him that leadership begins with listening.

“People want leaders who listen to them and understand the challenges they face,” he says. “You may not be able to solve every problem immediately, but listening and responding honestly can make a difference.”

During his time in public life, Ngobi developed a particular interest in issues affecting young people and families. He believes that unemployment, limited economic opportunities and the cost of living remain important challenges for communities.

According to Ngobi, young people should be encouraged to participate in community development rather than being treated simply as beneficiaries of government programmes.

“Young people have ideas, energy and the ability to contribute. They need opportunities and an environment where their voices can be heard,” he says.

Moving to the United Kingdom has provided Ngobi with an opportunity to experience a different society and develop new perspectives.

He says living in Britain has allowed him to appreciate the importance of community participation, professional development and personal responsibility.

“Moving to another country changes your perspective. You meet people from different backgrounds and learn different ways of doing things,” he says.

Although his role in local government belongs to an earlier stage of his life, Ngobi says the experience continues to influence his approach to everyday life.

He believes that public service should not be defined only by an official position.

“Leadership is not only about having a title. You can serve people in many different ways. Sometimes helping one person or supporting your community can be just as meaningful.”

Ngobi is currently concentrating on establishing his life in the UK while continuing to develop his professional skills and interests.

He says his journey has taught him that life can change unexpectedly and that people should remain open to new opportunities.

“My journey has taken me through different experiences, and every experience has taught me something,” he says. “I am looking forward to the future and to using what I have learned to contribute positively wherever I am.”

For Ngobi, the move to Britain represents not an end to his public-service journey,

but the beginning of another chapter.
