Due to lack of a secondary school in Bukiende Sub-county, locals in Burukuru Parish, Bukiende Sub-county in Mbale District have donated one hectare of land to construct a public community school.
Bukiende is the only sub-county in Mbale District without a primary or secondary school, where school-going children travel over 20 kilometers to access education in neighboring Manafwa or Bududa districts.
While speaking during the donation of land on Saturday, 19th September, 2026, the LC2 Chairperson of Burukuru Parish in Bukiende Sub-county, Vicente Washaki, said the land was donated by Moses Mukamba, one of the area residents.
He said most of their children drop out of school when they reach primary seven and Senior Two, especially girls, due to the long distances they have to travel to access education.
Mukamba, who donated the land, said he donated the land after seeing the high number of school dropouts which has led to insecurity in the area and the area lagging behind in terms of education.
He urged his fellow residents in the area to embrace the project, saying it is going to improve education in the area.
Rose Nambuya, the area councilor, said that as leaders, they have tried many times writing to the district leadership and their Members of Parliament to consider the sub-county under the ongoing national seed school program but have not yet got the opportunity.
Geoffrey Tsepwe, commonly known as Yaya, a businessman who is going to spearhead the construction of the school, said he is going to lobby his friends to raise money and construct the school.
He said they are waiting for the paperwork of officially giving them the land to be completed before they construct the secondary school before the end of this year.
Tsepwe urged his fellow residents to come together and support the project so that they can construct the school, saying government will find them on the way and realize that the area is in need of a school.
