KAMPALA
Police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder involving Moses Matovu, the veteran musician and leader of Afrigo Band.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, Matovu was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants this morning, 24th September 2026, at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
She says he was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for medical attention, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
“Police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder involving Matovu Moses, a musician with Afrigo Band,” Kawala said. “Our task team is currently at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the suspected assailants.”
Police say the 77-year-old musician, fondly known as Papa Moi, was attacked while on his routine morning walk to prayers at Kibuli Mosque. He sustained head injuries and severe blood loss.
Preliminary reports indicate exhibits including a concrete paver were recovered from the scene near his car.
Matovu was a founding member of Afrigo Band, Uganda’s longest-serving music group formed in 1975. He served as vocalist, saxophonist and bandleader for over five decades and was instrumental in shaping Uganda’s live band music.
