The Director of ICT and Research at the Uganda Communications Commission ( UCC), Christine Mugimba, has called on industry players to scale up mentorship of students in different universities and schools to enable them achieve full potential in their research and innovation projects .
Mugimba says Uganda does not lack talents in terms of eco-system and asked industry players to utilize the available talents by nurturing students into research and innovation that provide sustainable practical solutions to Uganda’s needs.

She made the call on September 26, 2026, during the award ceremony of the National ICT school club competitions which was won by Maruzi Seed School in Apac through its research project.
The Director ICT and Research at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Christine Mugimba, implored industry players to help students turn their innovation projects into practical solutions that drive Uganda’s development agenda.
Mugimba commended Makerere University for starting up a career employability App which brings industry players on board to mentor students to be able incubate their own businesses.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Board member, Eng. Paul Odoi, urged students to ensure their research and innovation respond to real needs, emphasizing that innovation must move beyond concepts to practice.
“Innovation should move towards practical solutions,” he said.
The Head Department of Computer and Communication Engineering at Makerere University, Dr. Abubaker Matovu Waswa, appreciated the Uganda Communications Commission for organizing the National ICT school club competitions, which he says has provided a platform to students to develop practical solutions that align with the needs of the country.
Finally, Dr. Abubaker Matovu Waswa, advised management of schools who lost in the National ICT Club competitions not to give up but continue trying to partner with stakeholders.
