NATIONAL

The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda Council has withdrawn its recognition of Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPHARM) Program at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, (MUST).

The withdrawal is contained in a Public Notice issued today, Monday, October 19, 2026 and signed by PSU Council’s Secretary, Dr. Lutoti Stephen.

According to PSU, MUST was having a non-Pharmacist (actually, a Nurse) heading the Pharmacy Department, has inadequate staff and yet the University had not placed an external advert to recruit qualified personnel.

The Council says that despite a Show Cause Notice dated 10th September, 2026 issued to the University after discovery of the inadequacies, requiring the University to show cause within 30 days why recognition should not be withdrawn and students transferred, the University failed to respond.

“At its 61st Emergency Council meeting held at Pharmacy House, Kyambogo, the PSU Council deliberated and resolved to withdraw its recognition of Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPHARM) Program at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, (MUST) with immediate effect from the date of this notice,” reads PSU statement.

Effects of De-Recognition

PSU Council shall not recognize any qualification obtained where courses were taught and or assessed during the period of de-recognition.

PSU Council has suspended issuance of PSU Pharmacy Student Numbers, recognition of any internship placement, and eligibility to sit PSU pre-internship and pre-registration qualifying examinations for any new graduates of MUST until compliance is restored.

PSU therefore advises MUST Pharmacy students to transfer to other universities that are recognized or wait until such a time that MUST complies.

According to PSU, the de-recognition will remain in place until a follow-up inspection is carried out to confirm compliance.
