A man in Zombo District has reportedly died by suicide after locking himself inside his house and cutting his throat with a spear tip, leaving behind a suicide note warning family members against misusing his property.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Asina Village, Asina Parish, Abanga Sub-county, leaving residents shocked after the man was discovered dead inside his house.

The deceased has been identified as Wilfred Oyenyboth, a father of three and resident of Asina Village.

Asina Village LC I Chairperson Richard Cwinyaai Commando confirmed the incident, saying Oyenyboth’s body was discovered after he had spent the night alone in the house.

“The deceased had spent the night alone in his house before he was discovered dead. Police findings established that he used a spear tip to inflict the fatal injury,” Cwinyaai said.

Cwinyaai further revealed that Oyenyboth had recently returned from visiting his in-laws in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Police transferred the body to Paidha Health Centre III for a postmortem examination before releasing it to the family for burial at his ancestral home. No official has been released by police.

Oyenyboth was laid to rest at Asina Village on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Following the tragedy, Abanga Sub-county LC III Chairperson Tatizo Onyuthi urged residents experiencing personal, financial or family difficulties to seek counselling and guidance from religious and community leaders.

“People going through difficult situations should not suffer in silence. They should seek guidance and counselling from religious and community leaders,” Onyuthi urged.

The incident adds to growing concern over suicide cases in Zombo District, where several deaths have reportedly been recorded this year.

Previous incidents include two cases in Abanga Sub-county and others in Padea Town Council, Paidha Town Council and Athuma Sub-county, with community leaders suggesting that some cases remain unreported.

Suicide remains a serious public health concern in Uganda, with experts frequently associating suicidal behaviour with financial hardship, domestic disputes, family conflicts and unaddressed mental health challenges.

According to police statistics cited by the World Health Organization Uganda, 218 attempted suicide cases were investigated in 2024, compared with 165 officially documented cases in 2023.
