BUDUDA
Police in Bududa District have arrested eight people, including head teachers and examination officials, over alleged malpractice during the ongoing Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
According to Bududa District Police Commander (DPC) Barnabas Banyenzaki, the suspects were found with answer sheets allegedly linked to an attempt to provide answers to candidates at Namahuli Primary School in Bukibiino Sub-county during Wednesday morning’s Science examination.
Banyenzaki said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that police were working to ensure the suspects are produced in court.
The District Education Officer, Vincent Matanda, said the desire by parents and communities to see their children excel academically could have contributed to the alleged malpractice, although the motive has not been established.
Those arrested include Jude Kusolo, Thomas Bukoma, Bonny Musoba and Isiah Natami, who were reportedly found at a house belonging to Andrew Wamema in the neighborhood of the school.
Others are Luke Khepoch, the chief invigilator; Rachel Bagonza, a Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) scout; Richard Mabala, head teacher of Busai Primary School; and Margaret Ajok, head teacher of Namahuli Primary School.
The arrests have raised questions about the integrity of examination supervision, particularly given the alleged involvement of officials entrusted with safeguarding the examination process.
By the time of filing this story, the eight suspects were still detained at Bududa Central Police Station as investigations continued.
