The court today, 17th February 2026 adjourned the hearing of case involving outgoing Butambala County MP Mohammad Muwanga Kivumbi and others to allow for further investigation, with the next mention set for March 10, 2026.
He appeared at the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court in a case involving charges stemming from an incident of alleged gunshots at his home, killing some occupants.
Kivumbi is prosecuted for terrorism, with 24 more suspects added to his charge sheet.
His defense team, led by Medard Lubega Ssegona, said that due process was not fully observed and that he has not recorded a statement in relation to the terrorism charges since his arrest.
Ssegona contended that investigators have not obtained a formal statement from Kivumbi, which undermines the integrity of the case and raises constitutional issues.
The prosecution maintains that investigations are ongoing and that all procedures undertaken so far fall within the framework of the law.
State attorneys are expected to respond to the defense’s claims as the Chief Magistrate prepares to deliver a ruling.
However earlier tension flared outside the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court after supporters of Muwanga Kivumbi chased away local political figure, Hajj Sulaiman Magala from the court premises.
The supporters had gathered in large numbers ahead of Kivumbi’s court appearance but were locked out of the court grounds after security personnel restricted access, citing security concerns.
