BUTALEJA
A nurse has appeared in court in Butaleja District charged with manslaughter and negligence following the death of a pregnant woman last year.
Prossy Mukyala, 31, who works at Kachonga Health Centre III, was brought before Butaleja Magistrate’s Court last week amid heightened public interest. She denies the charges.
According to the charge sheet, the nurse is accused of neglecting to exercise reasonable care, an omission the prosecution says led to the woman’s death
The court heard that instead of being transported by ambulance, Ms Namuhoma was reportedly referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital by motorcycle taxi. She later died after arriving at the facility.
Defence lawyer, Safiyu Were told the court that his client was not responsible for the death, arguing that the woman died at another health facility and not under Ms Mukyala’s direct supervision.
The arrest followed inquiries by the State House Health Monitoring Unit. Its director, Dr. Warren Naamara, said the case raised serious concerns about professional conduct in public health facilities.
Joy Nambozo, the presiding magistrate remanded Mukyala until 25th, February 2026 after rejecting her bail application.
