A tragic incident occurred at Budaka police station on March 31, 2026, when 80-year-old man accused of defiling a 2-year-old girl was found dead by committing suicide in his cell.
Yakobo Ngamba, the deceased and resident of Nawoja Village, Namengo Parish, Budaka Town Council in Budaka District, was discovered by the male cells guard at 5:00AM having hanged himself using his T-shirt and a coat.
According to Wilfred Kyempasa, the Bukedi North region police spokesperson, Yakobo had been detained since March 28, 2026, after being handed over by community members who had threatened to lynch him. A case of defilement had been opened, and investigations were underway.
He says police authorities, including the Deputy Regional CID and District Police Commander, visited the scene, and a post-mortem was conducted. His Worship, Kirala Martin G1 Budaka Magistrates Court directed the body to be handed over to relatives for burial.
The incident is under investigation, with reports to be submitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for guidance.
