Temperatures are rising at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) Kyankwanzi where the National retreat for NRM leaders is ongoing after President Museveni resurrected the Speakership debate.
Speaking during the opening of the retreat on Wednesday, 8th April, 2026, President Museveni said that although CEC had recommended maintaining the two (Among and Tayebwa) because it had become a tradition, the final decision will be made after proper discussion within the party caucus, allowing all aspirants to present their case.
The following day, Thursday, 9th April, Speaker Anita Among took to the microphone and lambasted Mao for overstepping his invite.
“We do cooperate with other political parties but the cooperation doesn’t mean that you come up to my bedroom; you remain in the compound, And by bedroom, I mean the position of Speaker,” Among said in what is viewed as a direct attack on Mao’s interest in her position.
Known for his acidic tongue, Mao fired back almost immediately saying the Speaker is not only playing bad politics but is bad mannered.
The Laroo-Pece Division MP Elect, DP President General and Minister for Constitutional Affairs wrote on his X-Account today, 9th April saying,
“This is not just bad politics. It is bad manners! Only the head of the family has the final word on who can access which room in the home. He doesn’t need lectures from a recently adopted child! Above all, when you insult your father’s visitors you’ve insulted your father.”
Mao was invited to the retreat on the directives of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who is also the National Chairman of NRM.
