Authorities Close Gold Mine in Namayingo Over Safety Concerns

Police in Namayingo on Tuesday 2nd June 2026 together with the Mineral Protection Unit led by the zonal commander closed a gold mining site in Namayingo district over safety concerns.

 

The site is located at Mabuka Village, in Bukana Sub County.

 

The operation which started at 14:12pm is aimed at protecting the lives of people that have for long engaged in illegal mining activities that endanger their lives.

 

According to Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Kasadha Michael, on Sunday the 31/05/2026 at about 01:00pm at the mining site, six people were rescued after being trapped when the mine caved in and collapsed during mining activities.

 

ASP Kasadha said the operations will continue even during night hours to ensure that everyone leaves the site.

 

At least 4 people die monthly in gold mining accidents in Namayingo district as unemployed youths are drawn into the unregulated activity.

 

Death is attributed to crude mining methods and weak law enforcement among others.
