The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), in collaboration with the Department of Wetlands Management and local governments, will roll out enforcement and restoration activities in Mbale and Mbarara cities as part of a nationwide effort to safeguard Uganda’s wetlands.
The exercise follows a Presidential directive aimed at assisting encroachers to vacate wetlands peacefully and restore the ecosystems.
According to William Lubuulwa, Senior Public Relations Officer at NEMA, the upcoming restoration will focus on the Namatala wetland in Mbale City and the River Rwizi catchment in Mbarara City.
He says the initiative is intended to restore degraded wetlands, protect water sources, and improve environmental resilience in urban areas. Local authorities will work alongside NEMA to ensure the process is carried out in an orderly manner.
