The territorial police in Bugiri on Monday 29th June 2026 arrested a 26-year-old untrained local caregiver, identified as Atikwi Racheal of Bukwaku–Nakavule village, Nabukalu Sub-county in Bugiri district, for allegedly causing the death of a 4-year-old child.
ASP Kasadha Michael the Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson said that according to initial findings, on 28/06/2026 the child’s mother, identified as Kamugisha Altronce, took the unwell minor to the caregiver.
On a local, non-medical assessment, the caregiver claimed the child had a problem with the ovula and proceeded to cut it with a razor blade, causing severe bleeding. When the bleeding persisted, the child was rushed to Bugiri General Hospital but died before arrival.
The incident was reported to police by the mother. Investigations are underway and the suspect is in custody.
Police cautioned the public against using unqualified caregivers. He advised them to seek medical care from recognized health facilities to prevent such tragedies.
