Aswa West Region Police hast named all the 15 people who perished and 24 who were seriously injured in the fatal accident that occurred along the Kampala–Gulu Highway at Bobi Sub-county, Omoro District, on Tuesday night. The crash occurred on July 7, 2026, at around 9:40pm, police said.
The accident inovolved UBE 110H, an Isuzu bus belonging to Opit Travellers Bus Company driven by Abdul Ismail, 55, and KBS 564D/ZE7948, a white Mercedes-Benz Actros semi-trailer driven by Umaru Ahmed Hussein, 38, a Kenyan national. An unidentified male pedestrian was also involved.
According to police, the bus was traveling from Kampala toward Gulu City at high speed with an unspecified number of passengers. On reaching Lwena Village in Bobi Sub-county, the driver allegedly tried to dodge a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control, veered off his lane and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.
Ongom names the deceased as Abdul Ismail, 55, driver of the bus, Ahmed Aden, from Mombasa, Kenya, passenger on the trailer, and Umar Ahmed Hussein, 38, Kenyan, trailer driver.
Others are; Aguti Justine Jesse, 23, resident of Koch Goma, Nwoya District, Ojok Bosco, 60, resident of Layibi, Gulu City, Ajok Harriet, 40, resident of Commercial Road, Gulu City, Odoch Stanley Uhuru, 37, resident of Pece Laroo, Gulu City, and Apiyo Rose, 41, resident of Laroo, Gulu City.
Fatalities also include Ausi Justine, 28, resident of Koch Ongako, Omoro District, Ojok John Paul, 49, resident of Gulu City, Odong Walter Uhuru, 37, resident of Koch Oyaro, Omoro District, Watmon John, 78, resident of Ongako, Koch Goma, Kinyera Godfrey Acire, 35, resident of Layibi, Gulu City, Maniriho Philip, 30, resident of Tegwana, Gulu City, and Kadara Musamin, 28, resident of Kirombe, Layibi, Gulu City.
Among the injured currently receiving treatment are:
Lamwaka Harriet, 28; Daniel Wamimbi Fortunate, 26, a student at Gulu University; Angom Agnes, 20; Anena Happy Carol, 42; Lakado Jordan Joshua, 21; Oriba Deo, 30; Opio Martin, 32; Andama Charles, 49; Komakech Robert, 40; Acayo Monica, 45; Piloya Florence, 46; Ayaa Suzan, 34; Adinan Ismail, 53; Agenrwoth Esther, 20; Okello Charles, 45; Acheng Jackline, 31; Achiro Suzan, 27; Acheng Stella, 42; Limoo Denis, 25, from Eldoret, Kenya; Kasumba James, 45; Okee Steven; Wongo Traver, 27; Martin Aliu, 39; and Akello Florence, 52.
Police said they responded to the scene, evacuated the bodies for postmortem, and rushed the survivors to various hospitals and health facilities in Gulu City for treatment.
Ongom urges motorists to observe speed limits and prioritize the safety of passengers and other road users.
“This is regrettable. We send our condolences to the bereaved families and continue to pray for those receiving treatment for a quick recovery,” he said.
