A teacher at Zion Secondary School Kirinda in Kiboga District is on the run after allegedly assaulting a Senior Two student with a hoe handle, leaving the student with serious injuries.
According to Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, the incident occurred on 14/07/2026 at around 8:30am.
He says the student, identified as Ndiwalana Arafat, 17, a resident of Kyato Village, Kasega Parish in Kapeke Sub-county, was reportedly found outside class with his shirt untucked.
The Deputy Headteacher, identified as Master Sserwadda Ken, ordered Arafat to tuck in his shirt and return to class. Police say the student complied but later went back to class and untucked his shirt again in protest.
This angered Sserwadda, who picked a hoe handle and followed the student into the classroom. He allegedly hit Arafat on the back and neck, injuring the boy’s right eye and causing him to collapse.
“Students raised an alarm which attracted other staff members who rescued the victim,” Kigozi said.
The student was given first aid at school to stop the bleeding and was later rushed to a clinic for further treatment. He is currently reported to be in stable condition.
After recovering, Arafat reported a case of torture at Kiboga Police Station. Statements from the reporter and witnesses have been recorded.
Police say the teacher fled the school immediately after the incident and efforts are underway to apprehend him.
Kigozi appealed to teachers to remain professional and control their tempers when handling learners.
“Some students can be stubborn and deliberately provoke teachers. However, teachers should always act professionally when administering punishment,” he said.
