Uganda Traffic Police has intercepted 18 School Buses that were transporting children from educational trips at night.

According the Traffic Police Spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, the buses were intercepted at Njeru Checkpoint on the night of Thursday, 17th July, 2026.

The Traffic police action is in line with the Ministry of Education and Sports directive suspending school trips and prohibiting night travel for schools already on trips.

Kananura says the buses were escorted to a safe parking area where they remained until morning, today, Saturday, July 18, 2026 adding that the buses will be escorted by Police to their respective destinations.

“Schools already on trips are reminded not to travel at night. Instead, they should report to the nearest Police station for guidance and where necessary a Police escort,” says Kananura.

Police now directs that all return journeys must be undertaken between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m following the numerous accidents involving buses transporting school children on education tours.
