SOROTI CITY
Two street kids have tragically lost their lives and another has been injured in what is suspected to be an incident of mob justice in Soroti City.
According to preliminary police findings, a group of people attacked the three street kids based on suspicions of theft.
In a statement released by the police this Monday morning, 3rd August, 2026, it was reported that two of the victims were assaulted and set on fire, while a third was saved by police officers and transported to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
The police in Soroti City confirm they are conducting an investigation into the suspected mob justice incident, which took place around 2:00 a.m. on August 3, 2026, along Town Talks Street in Soroti Central Ward, Soroti East Division.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Haji Ibrahim Saiga, the East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, stated that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the city mortuary for postmortem examination.
Saiga said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of the incident and to identify those responsible.
“The Uganda Police Force strongly condemns acts of mob justice and reminds the public that every suspect is entitled to due process under the law,” he emphasized.
The police are urging community members to report suspected offenders to law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands.
“Anyone with information that may help with the investigations is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or reach out to Soroti Central Police Station,” Saiga added.
The Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report for 2025 recorded a staggering 950 murders resulting from mob action, accounting for 22.4% of all homicides that year. The primary triggers for these incidents included suspicions of theft, robbery, and murder.
