SOROTI CITY
The Teso District Muslim Council has announced the selection of a talented team that will compete against three other Muslim districts in a regional competition focused on Quran memorization, recitation, drum beating, and the call to prayer.
This team was carefully chosen from seven political districts: Katakwi, Amuria, Kapelebyong, Kaberamaido, Kalaki, Serere, and Soroti, all constituents of the Teso District Muslim Council.
The competition was held at the Jamia Main Mosque in Soroti City, where Abdu Razak Abdul Hai from Wera-Amuria stood out as the top performer in the call to prayer category, followed closely by Sahid Hassan and Muhamad Kalenzi, both hailing from Soroti.
In Quran recitation with sight, Aidarus Muhammad from Soroti emerged as the leader, with Salman Hussein from Soroti and Amir Noor from Amuria sharing the second position. Hashim Etegu of Soroti placed third.
Meanwhile, in Quran recitation without sight, Abdul Muiz Nasur from Soroti excelled, reciting five books, while Jamal Ramadhan, also from Soroti, managed to recite two books. Additionally, Hassan Murwasira (Soroti), Nusra Asawo (Katakwi), and Kassim Malale (Soroti) made impressive recitations.
In the drum (mataali) beating category, the Itiswam team from Campswahili Mosque, the Answar team from Teso Inn, and the Jamia Main Mosque team, all representing Soroti City, were recognized as the best.
Yusuf Okiror, the County Sheikh of Soroti, announced these results as the chief judge immediately following the event at Jamia Main Mosque.
Winning teams received various prizes, including flasks, cash awards, mathematical sets, watches, bowls, and copies of the Quran among other gifts.
Sheikh Ramathan Ibrahim Ibwakit, the district Kadhi of Teso Muslim District, stated that this selected team will compete against teams from Moroto, Kumi, and the Karamoja Muslim districts on Saturday, August 22nd, 2026, at Soroti SS.
Sheikh Ibwakit is optimistic about his team’s chances of victory, citing their advantage as hosts of the competition.
He highlighted the numerous benefits of such competitions, noting that they foster intellectual growth and spiritual development in participants.
Opening the competition on August 18th, 2026, Hajj Imran Muluga, the Resident District Commissioner, urged parents to educate their children in both English and religious studies, particularly in Quran recitation.
Hajj Muluga, also serving as the chairman in Tororo Muslim District, emphasized that the time has come for a more comprehensive education for children.
“I want to advise you parents, the days of teaching our children only one type of education are over. This generation of dot com is a generation of teaching two sectors. You need to teach them English, the quran and theology and the teachers are there. And you begin with your school,” he said.
He encouraged parents to actively support teachers in instilling both religious knowledge and language skills in their children.
The best team from this regional event will go on to represent North-Eastern (Teso and Karamoja) muslim region at the national competition scheduled for Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, coinciding with the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Maulid).
The top performers across all categories in the nation will have the opportunity to undertake a pilgrimage to Mecca and receive additional awards.
