The latest HIV infection rates in Uganda have sent shock waves to the Ministry of Health officials who are now calling for behavioral factory reset.
Commenting on the recent statistics that Kampala City receives new 200 infections per week, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine says current estimates indicate that Uganda records about 36,648 new HIV infections each year, approximately 100 new infections every day.
However, what is of bigger concern is that about a third of these infections occur among young people below 24 years.
She reveals further that for Kampala, the number of new infections per week is actually slightly higher than 200 adding that as HIV becomes more treatable, citizens must not become complacent.
The Ministry reiterates that Uganda does not have any HIV vaccine as of today but urges members of the public to rely on proven measures such as: Consistent and correct use of condoms, Abstinence, HIV testing of partner’s whose status you do not know, PrEP, PEP after possible exposure, and Adherence to ARVs as prescribed by the health worker.
