Residents in Namisindwa District are counting losses after heavy rain pounded the area on Monday, 2nd November, 2026 destroying houses and crops.

The disaster happened in the sub-counties of Bumityelo, Magale, and Namabya.

According to Samuel Wetsune, one of the affected residents in Bumityelo Sub-county, the rain lasted about three hours and caused destruction.

He said his two houses and kitchen were blown off by a storm that accompanied the heavy rain, adding that he and his entire family are now taking shelter at neighbours’ homes.

Sarah Khainza, another affected resident, said her crops including bananas, and coffee were totally destroyed, urging the concerned authorities to respond urgently.

The affected residents asked district leaders to help them get relief support.

Emma Bwayo, the Namisindwa District LC5 Chairperson, said over 10 houses in Bumityelo, 3 in Magale Sub-county and 4 in Namabya were brought down by strong winds. Many crops, especially matooke, were destroyed.

“We appeal to the Office of the Prime Minister to prioritize response to such disasters,” Bwayo said.

Two weeks ago, officials from the Uganda National Meteorological Authority held meetings with stakeholders, district and sub-county leaders across the Bugisu region, sensitizing them on ways of accessing weather forecasts digitally for their particular areas. They were informed that in early September, the Bugisu region should expect El Niño rains.
