32 Primary teachers in Mbale District stormed the district Headquarters on Friday afternoon, 19th November 2021 demanding payment of their 12 months salaries.

While talking the media at the district headquarters, Waneloba James who was given an appointment and assigned to Nabweye primary school found in Mbale District says in 2019 Mbale District local government ran an advertisement in the New Vision paper as it was to recruit primary teachers and they immediately applied.

After some little time they were then shortlisted and were given invitations for interviews.

Waneloba adds that out of all the number which applied, Mbale District local government appointed only 64 teachers and issued them with appointment letters and posting letters to different schools in the same district.

However, out of the 64, only 32 teachers have been paid their salaries and the rest leaving them asking why they are not paid, Waneloba adds.

Waneloba revealed further after the lockdown was lifted earlier in 2021, they went to their respective schools of assignment and started performing their work as qualified government teachers with all necessities.

He says that after failing to be paid, they complained to the district authorities who did not respond to their requests satisfactorily. This prompted them to sue the district.

“When they heard that we had taken the district to court, they called us and pleaded with us to solve the issue amicably. They convinced us to withdraw the case from court. Immediately we withdrew the case, they turned around and said our appointment letters were fake,” Waneloba explained further.

The affected teachers have now threatened to protest against Mbale district authorities for not working on their issues.

Our attempts at getting a comment from Mbale District Service Commission yielded no fruits.

However, when contacted, the Chief Administrative Officer Mbale District, Madam Amulen Luccie through a phone call said the teachers should ask the CAO who was in charge at that time. She also said the Media should not call her anymore on the same matter.
